SEO vs. AEO: If You’re Not Adapting, You’re Getting Left Behind

Digital marketing moves fast. Like… blink and your strategy is outdated fast.

For years, SEO (Search Engine Optimization) was the game. Rank on Google, get clicks, win business. Simple. Don't get me wrong, that still works, but now? Things are shifting. People aren’t just “Googling” anymore—they’re asking ChatGPT. Siri. Alexa. Google’s AI results and getting answers. A lot of them.

Welcome to the new game: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization).

And if you’re still playing 2018 SEO… you’re already behind.

Yay, original content!

What SEO Used to Be (and Still Kind Of Is)

SEO is all about ranking. Keywords, backlinks, blog posts, and site structure—all designed to get you to the top of Google so people click your link. Example: Someone searches “catering in Frisco.” You want your site to show up first. That’s SEO. And don’t get it twisted—it still matters. But here’s the problem… People don’t always click anymore. Ask, and you shall receive, right?

Enter AEO: The “Just Give Me the Answer” Era

Now people are asking:

  • “What’s the best catering company in Frisco?”
  • “How much does catering cost?”
  • “Who should I hire for my event?”

And instead of showing 10 blue links… They get one answer.

Pulled straight into:

  • Google AI summaries
  • ChatGPT responses
  • Voice assistants

No scrolling. No clicking. Just answers. That’s AEO. If your content isn’t built to be the answer… you’re invisible.

Here’s Where Most Businesses Screw This Up

They think SEO = stuffing keywords into blogs. So they write something like:

“Best catering in Frisco offering catering services in Frisco for all your catering needs in Frisco…”

Congrats. You just wrote something nobody wants to read—and AI definitely isn’t prioritizing.

AEO flips the script.

It rewards:

  • Clear answers
  • Real expertise
  • Structured, helpful content
  • Straight-up value

Not keyword spam.

SEO Gets You Seen. AEO Gets You Chosen.

Here’s the simplest way to look at it:

  • SEO = “Show me options”
  • AEO = “Tell me what to do”

If your business only shows up in a list… you’re competing.

If your business is the answer… You win. You win big. I mean, really, who's out here arguing with ChatGPT or Google Gemini?

So What Does Winning Actually Look Like?

,Instead of writing:

“We are a full-service catering company in Frisco…”

You write:

“The average cost of catering in Frisco ranges from $15–$50 per person depending on menu and service style.”

Now you’re:

  • Answering real questions
  • Building trust instantly
  • Positioning yourself as the expert

That’s AEO. Don't get me wrong, you'll still use some old SEO tactics, it's still valuable, but real answers are winning, and it's a good thing.

How to Start Transitioning (Without Overcomplicating It)

You don’t need to rebuild your entire site overnight.

Start here:

1. Answer Real Questions

Think about what your customers actually ask you every day—and turn those into content. Real captions for videos with well-thought-out descriptions are where you grow. Don't just ChatGPT it. Write your shit out or start with a ChatGPT draft and adjust from there. It never hurts to streamline ideas from a super smart AI engine.

2. Be Direct

Stop dancing around the answer. Say it clearly. Up front.

3. Structure Matters

Use headers, bullet points, and clean formatting so AI can easily pull your content.

4. Add Depth (Not Bullshit)

Short answers are good. But layered, helpful explanations are better.

Final Thoughts: This Isn’t the Future… It’s Already Happening

SEO isn’t dead. But it’s evolving—fast. The businesses that win over the next few years aren’t just the ones ranking…

They’re the ones getting pulled into the answer. If your content doesn’t do that?

Someone else’s will.
